Why I built this
The plan should feel as considered as the trip.
When I started planning longer overlanding trips into the Maze District of Canyonlands, I did what most trip leaders do: I opened a Google Doc.
Then I spent hours filling it with everything our group might need once pavement and cell service disappeared: mileage between fuel stops, permit details, backcountry travel rules, links to onX routes, daily itineraries, and meeting points.
The documents worked, technically. But they were ugly, slow to build, and easy to skim. I could put every answer in one place and still arrive at departure day unsure who had read the whole thing. The route lived in one app, decisions lived in a group chat, and the actual plan lived in a document that felt more like homework than something built for an adventure.
I kept thinking there had to be a better way. I looked for one and couldn't find it, so I built it myself.
The Dirt Brief is the tool I wanted for those trips: one good-looking, practical page for the route, itinerary, permits, meeting details, gear, and the decisions a crew needs to make. It is built for the person who always ends up organizing—and for everyone counting on them when the road gets remote.
